Best Cocktail for New Year's Eve: Scotch Old Fashioned
Plenty of sparkling wine and Champagne will be flowing on New Year's Eve, but offering up one classic cocktail is always a great way to go. My preferred drink at this time of year is the Scotch Old-Fashioned. The recipe calls for Bourbon or Rye, but I prefer a high-quality blended Scotch to add some complexity of flavor and to dial back the sweetness a bit. If you're hosting a New Year's bash, leave all the ingredients out together with simple instructions so everyone can mix up their own. The bar is now open!
Ingredients: (makes 1 drink)
- 2 ounces blended scotch, preferably Johnnie Walker Black
- 1 orange slice
- Maraschino cherry
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 2-3 drops bitters
- Splash of club soda
Drop orange slice, cherry, sugar, splash of soda and bitters in a highball glass.
Muddle the ingredients, mashing the cherry with the orange well.
Drop rocks in the glass, pour in the Scotch and stir to chill.
Toast to the New Year and do not forget New Year's Day — a roast pork with sauerkraut and apples is definitely in order!
