Drink Wine to Avoid Getting Sick on Vacation

With summer in full swing, many of us have our vacation plans set and are just counting down the days until we get to go away. I know I am. Well, for those of us jetting off to foreign locales, here's a travel tip that may just prevent your vacation from being ruined by stomach bugs or food poisoning: Drink wine.

Studies have shown that drinking alcohol may just be your best bet for warding off illnesses like listeria, salmonella, E. coli and even Montezuma's revenge, particularly in areas of the world with sub-standard sanitation requirements. The more alcohol is consumed, the less likely you are to suffer from food-borne illnesses. And the higher the percentage of alcohol in your wine, the better.

The New York Times published a health piece a few years ago on an outbreak of salmonella in Spain among people who had been exposed to contaminated food at a buffet. The findings of health officials revealed that "the rate of sickness was lowest in those who had consumed large amounts of beer, wine or spirits." The report goes on to add that "consumers of larger amounts of alcohol also had the lowest levels of sickness documented in earlier studies of large salmonella outbreaks in Spain."

Bottom line: Drink up! Not that I needed an excuse to drink more wine while on vacation…
