Producer Spotlight: AB Valley Wines

Welcome to the latest installment of our series highlighting the wineries and producers that craft the wines for Tasting Room! We're excited to show you some behind-the-scenes photos and give you a peek at how some of our best Portuguese wines are made at the award-winning AB Valley Wines in northwest Portugal.

AB Valley Wines is a new project in the Vinho Verde region, founded as a partnership between winemaker António Sousa and vigneron Bernardo Lencastre. A shared passion for winemaking and the region led these two long-time friends to start a business that they hoped would challenge the status quo in the area and grow the appreciation of Portuguese wine around the world.

Their main goal is to make wines that express the full potential and terroir of Vinho Verde in the sub-region of Amarante. AB Valley's wines are produced exclusively from the the indigenous grape varieties of the region, preserving their unique typicity, aromas and flavors. The rich soils and natural barriers against the influence of the Atlantic make this area ideal for the development of white grape varieties such as Avesso, Arinto and Azal, and reds such as Espadeiro and Vinhão. The result is more mature fruit, good acidity and a higher alcohol level.

Working with the grapes that are considered the most important in the region, Sousa aims to reflect the perfect symbiosis between terroir and varieties. He seeks a unique profile, balancing irreverence and freshness with versatility and complexity. The result is wines that are expressive, evolved, and perfect for matching with food.
