Producer Spotlight: Bodegas La Purísima

Welcome to the latest installment of our new series highlighting the wineries and producers that craft the wines for Tasting Room! We're excited to show you some behind-the-scenes photos and give you a peek at how our rich and rustic Spanish Monastrell wines are made at Bodegas La Purísima.

Since 1946, Bodegas La Purisima has been committed to traditional, yet innovative winemaking in the Yecla region of Spain. The winery was founded by several local farmers that shared a desire to produce great wines. They registered Yecla with the prestigious French Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée and was rewarded with the Denominación de Origen for the region in 1975.

Yecla is located in southeastern Spain, near the towns of Murcia, Alicante and Valencia. The soil there is poor, with a high proportion of limestone that permeates the soil to create ideal growing conditions. Monastrell is the main variety grown in this region, as it thrives extremely well here, and Bodegas La Purísima tests and categorizes each of its vineyards to find the best varieties to match each plot's soil type.

The winemaker at Bodegas La Purisima is Pedro José Azorín, who was born and raised in Yecla, into a family that's been making wine in the region for two generations. The biggest challenge for any winemaker in Yecla, according to Azorín, is understanding the local terroir and sticking with traditional methods while using modern winemaking techniques to improve upon the quality of the grapes.
