Producer Spotlight: Wellington Wines

Welcome to the latest installment of our new series highlighting the wineries and producers that craft the wines for Tasting Room! We're excited to show you some behind-the-scenes photos and give you a peek at how our popular South African Pinotage and Chenin Blanc are made at Wellington Wines.

Wellington Wines was established in 2013, combining the efforts of three local wineries with rich histories: Wellington Cooperative (founded in 1906), Bovlei Cooperative (1907) and Wamakersvallei (1941). The three wineries came together because they shared a common passion and heritage, as well as a desire to reach out to the international community with their unique wines and terroir.

Their goal was to show the world that South Africa, while relatively new to the global market, has been producing wines and innovating in the field since the 18th century. South Africa considers its wines "Old New World."

Wellington concentrates on making two varieties for which South Africa is well known: Pinotage and Chenin Blanc. Pinotage is the only truly South African grape that exists, bred in 1925 as a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut by a professor of viticulture at the University of Stellenbosch. The result is an inky purple wine with bold, dark flavors of plum, smoke and licorice that pairs extremely well with red meat and barbecue.

Chenin Blanc is a trendy white wine that has taken hold of the region and is now outperforming the rest of the world. No doubt consumers will soon be associating Chenin Blanc with South Africa, the way they connect Shiraz with Australia, and Malbec with Argentina. Chenin Blanc's ancestral home is the Loire Valley in France, but the South African version is all about zesty, exotic, tropical fruit flavors and a dry style that brings you back for sip after sip.

Taste the wines for yourself. The 2016 Ohene South Africa Pinotage and 2016 Die Argitek South Africa Chenin Blanc are currently on sale in Tasting Room's Bottle Shop.
